''We are on the fast track to climate catastrophe. (…) Forests and ecosystems must be protected as they provide powerful climate solutions.''

United Nations Secretary General

Urgency to act against climate change

It's an undeniable fact: the city of Châteauguay is fortunate to have significant forest cover and exceptional natural environments on its territory, which are unfortunately all too rare in southern Quebec. This condition favors the presence of many species of flora and fauna, some of which are rare. What's more, these ecosystems provide invaluable ecological services: climate regulation, air purification, flood and drought mitigation, etc.

Hawthorn buckthorn, a tree classified as an endangered species found only in the Châteauguay-Léry region of Quebec. 15 years ago, Héritage Saint-Bernard undertook floristic inventories of the Châteauguay-Léry green corridor with the aim of protecting this valuable natural environment. The research identified several hundred hawthorn buckthorns, confirming the value of the area. The hawthorn buckthorn quickly became the symbol of the fight to protect the region's natural environments.v
